A year after its debut, Apple’s iPhone 16e remains the most accessible option in its lineup. Compact and relatively affordable, it replaced the SE series with modern looks and enough power for daily use. But there’s one key reason why you should hold off on buying it right now: the iPhone 17e might be just around the corner.
A capable compromise - with clear limitations
Released as the spiritual successor to the iPhone SE, the iPhone 16e struck a delicate balance. It offered many features of the iPhone 16 while shedding others to hit a more attractive price - around $600.
With a 6.1-inch bezel-less display and enough RAM to run Apple Intelligence, it’s clearly more modern than any SE before it. However, to maintain the lower cost, Apple made some intentional cuts.
The 16e comes with only a single 48-megapixel rear camera, with no ultra-wide or telephoto lens. It lacks MagSafe and supports only the slower Qi wireless charging at 7.5W. The USB-C port is limited to 20W charging, and there’s no support for the faster data transfer or accessories available on higher-end iPhones.
These decisions weren’t accidental. Apple deliberately reserved standout features for the standard iPhone 16, priced $200 higher. The 16e was designed to be good - but not too good.
iPhone 17e rumors: A game changer?
Recent leaks suggest Apple might unveil the iPhone 17e as early as next month. If true, it could significantly change the budget iPhone equation.
The 17e is expected to address many of the 16e’s compromises. Unlike the ultra-thin iPhone Air, which uses the same 48MP camera due to its slim design, the 17e may feature a thicker build - making it more suitable for a dual-camera system like the one found on the standard iPhone 17.
Since Apple produces the iPhone 17 in large volumes, sharing components across the 17 and 17e could help reduce costs while giving the cheaper model better specs. If the 17e gets an ultra-wide lens or improved charging, it would significantly narrow the gap between it and its premium siblings.
Even if you want the 16e - waiting still makes sense
Maybe you’ve already decided that the iPhone 16e suits your needs. Even then, waiting could be the smarter move. Apple often drops prices or clears inventory through certified refurbished deals after a new model is launched. If the 16e is discontinued, third-party retailers may offer steep discounts to move leftover stock.
So whether you end up buying the 17e or sticking with the 16e, waiting a month could either unlock better features or save you real money.
For those who’ve been on the fence, that’s a pretty compelling reason to stay patient.
